Gian Piero Gasperini gave an extensive interview to Gazzetta dello Sport on the eve of Roma's clash with Atalanta, reflecting on the transfer window, his squad's commitment and his ambitions for the season ahead.
Gasperini acknowledged the financial constraints that shaped Roma's summer. "When we tried to take Greenwood and Summerville, I understood that we hadn't solved the problems with the Champions League qualification money," he said. "The summer was torture—constantly revising market ideas and giving up on players who were enthusiastic about coming to Roma, for salary cap reasons. The ownership, within the financial boundaries, did everything possible. My regret was compensated by something else." That something was the willingness of his squad to take pay cuts and prioritize the club and city above earnings. "A group of young and less young players cut their salaries and put the love for the shirt and the place first: Dybala, Hermoso, Mancini, Cristante, Pellegrini, Lulli," Gasperini explained. "This spirit is our strength. It doesn't happen everywhere."
On his players, Gasperini was emphatic. Of Paulo Dybala's fitness: "He did all the preparation excellently, he's strong, he's in good shape. I hate certain words: preserve, save, rest. I ask Paulo: 'Do you want to play again?' If he says yes, I keep him in even at 4-0. Never stop a boy who is enjoying himself and playing." On Donyell Malen: "If he challenges Higuaín's record of 36 goals, it wouldn't surprise me." Gasperini explained his attraction to Malen's technique: "The first touch, with which he creates space. With the second he prepares, with the third he shoots. I told myself: if I move those three touches closer to goal, he becomes lethal." On Rodrigo Mora, he rejected comparisons to a previous player: "No! This is a real talent. Every ball he touches, something happens. As it does with the great ones." Of young defender Emanuele Lulli, whom he had training with the first team in the previous season: "For athletic values, speed and resistance, he is superior to everyone, even Wesley. A force of nature. And he's a golden boy. He must grow technically."
On the immediate challenge, Gasperini said of Atalanta: "Very strong, with the economic power of a big club. Like last year, it remains a point of reference." Roma lost to and drew with Atalanta in the previous season, and Gasperini indicated he was ready to end that record: "It would be about time."
