Francesco Totti spoke about Roma's title prospects while attending Fiorentina's centenary celebrations in Florence on 2 September. Speaking to Sky Sport, the club legend assessed Gian Piero Gasperini's squad after a strong start to the season. "From a fan's perspective I won't say, but they've started with the right foot," Totti said. "We're at the beginning, the market has closed now and from now on the real season begins. I hope Roma can put in a great push alongside Inter, Napoli and Juve — these are the teams I believe will fight until the end. Given how they've started there is the possibility, but let's not say anything more."
Totti also addressed Manu Koné's decision to stay at the club. "When you have the fortune of an manager who wants you there's a desire to prove yourself, to do well," he said, reflecting on his own experience of playing in cohesive Roma squads. "We had a fantastic group, we saw each other even after training. We had one single objective: to achieve a unique result. And we managed to hit it."
The former captain lavished praise on Roma's attacking partnership of Donyell Malen and Paulo Dybala, already generating excitement among supporters. "The Malen-Dybala pairing — is it like Batistuta-Totti? At Roma it's easy to be carried to the stars, but also to the stalls," Totti said. "They're a strong pairing, proving their value. They're two extraordinary players. If they keep it up they can change the photos the fans keep, even though Malen doesn't have Batistuta's hair and Dybala is actually similar to me. That works, come on."
Totti also spoke with fellow attendee Stevan Jovetic about football and beyond, calling him a great person and player. On Fiorentina's centenary: "Not everyone gets to play — we're lucky to be here. Florence, like Rome, has always supported the shirt. I know the love they transmit to players."
