Gian Piero Gasperini praised Rodrigo Mora as a prodigious talent following Roma's 4-0 debut victory against Fiorentina on 24 August, but acknowledged the squad requires additional depth to sustain a campaign across the league, European competition and Coppa Italia. Speaking to DAZN, Sky and in the post-match press conference, Gasperini described the 19-year-old Mora, who made his Roma debut as a starter, as possessing rare technical qualities and elite athleticism. "We are in front of an extraordinary talent," Gasperini said. "At 19 he has already completed two seasons with Porto, winning. Two years ago he scored 10 goals. He is a boy in evolution, in growth, but the personality with which he played tonight... He had a bit of physical fatigue afterwards, which is normal. But every time he touches the ball something beautiful happens. For his characteristics he is resilient, he has absolute level athletic values. He is versatile, he can play as he did tonight but also on the right and left. He has football as a talent."
Gasperini emphasised the squad's strong mentality and cohesion. "The mentality of this group is what gives me most satisfaction," he said. "These boys have restarted as they concluded last season. Even last year it was like that, then we grew. Now we carry forward more knowledge. But their attitude in every match and in training is extraordinary. Here there are boys who have done everything to play at Roma and to stay at Roma. Dybala, Pellegrini, Cristante, Hermoso, in the core. But also the new arrivals and Mora—he and his agent did everything to come to Roma." Dybala delivered a commanding performance, assisting Gianluca Mancini's goal at the 55-minute mark. Gasperini highlighted the 32-year-old's physical condition: "He is a boy at 32 and in the fullness of physical and technical maturity. He can have less speed, but not much less. A bit less power in his shot, but today he is certainly among the very first in our league, if not the first."
On recruitment, Gasperini confirmed Roma's business is incomplete. "We have not yet completed numerically. After the international break the fixture list is chilling, and it is absolutely necessary to have more numbers to face the season. A team that plays league, Champions and Coppa Italia runs the risk of losing some players in the same period and then you run into difficulty," he explained. He also praised young defender Lulli, deployed in the match. "Lulli is a boy who was already convened several times in the first team last season. This year he completed all preparation with us and important friendlies, most recently against Borussia Dortmund playing very well. He has extraordinary athletic values, resistance and speed. Like all 2007s he has room for growth, especially on the technical side and experience playing. This year we have many commitments, many matches especially after the international break, and it is necessary to have more players. The fact of having one in-house for us is tremendous help."
Gasperini resisted early predictions about title contention, stating he cannot judge Roma's championship credentials after a single match. "When I said that results would give us our dimension, I cannot know that relative to the league, because you must know the opponents very well. It is not only about us," he said. On Malen and Dybala's offensive partnership, he noted both are operating at European level. "Malen is extraordinary, and not by chance. Here at Roma he feels strong and appreciated, he feels a leader on the pitch, he has room for growth athletically as well after the World Cup. Probably he has found the right environment." Regarding Manu Koné's physical status after showing signs of discomfort, Gasperini's final remarks were truncated in the press conference material.
