Francesco Totti has disclosed a behind-the-scenes clash during Roma's recruitment of Javier Pastore from Paris Saint-Germain, describing it as emblematic of his lack of real decision-making power in a management role at the club. In his new autobiography Oltre, the former captain recounts a meeting attended by Mauro Baldissoni, Monchi, Federico Balzaretti and Francesco Vallone, where he openly questioned the Argentine's fit with Eusebio Di Francesco's system. "Non ho nulla contro Pastore. Ma con il sistema di gioco di Di Francesco non c'entra niente. In questo momento dove lo metti nel 4-3-3?" Totti said, arguing that the player would have required a tactical shift to a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-1-2 formation to be properly utilised.
Totti felt sidelined throughout his time in an executive capacity, initially treated as little more than a figurehead and later marginalised even when he moved closer to technical decisions. "Di fatto non potevo decidere nulla. O, peggio, mi lasciavano decidere solo quando la mia scelta coincideva con quella dei più alti dirigenti della Roma," he writes, meaning he could only decide matters when his view already aligned with senior leadership.
Baldissoni responded harshly to Totti's reservations: "Vedi sempre problemi, Francesco, sei sempre contro." The criticism stung deeply, Totti recalls: "Contro la Roma? Io? Non sapevo se ridere o piangere." Di Francesco himself later told Totti he had not requested the Pastore signing: "Francè, io non l'ho chiesto." The distance between Totti and the board widened further. He urged the directors to take public responsibility without involving the manager: "Dite la verità. Non buttate il nostro allenatore in mezzo al circo, se lo magnano qui a Roma." Totti's overall assessment was unsparing: "Non era un gruppo dirigenziale affiatato."
