Atalanta manager Maurizio Sarri praised Roma's quality after a league match at the Stadio Olimpico on matchday three, saying his side had put an impressive team under pressure despite leaving the final outcome uncertain.
Sarri told journalists: "There was a need to suffer. We faced the team most in form; I believe they will fight for the title until the end. We were careful in the first half, played well in the first thirty minutes of the second half. We leave with the conviction of having put a difficult squad under pressure." He added that Roma were "the team most in condition in Serie A" and would "fight for the title until the end."
On the closing stages, Sarri said his side struggled to regain territory and paid the price. "If you wait for Roma low, you must expect they can hurt you," he explained. He acknowledged that his team's defending was "too low" compared to his usual approach: "I believe it is an inevitable process." On an incident involving Gaetano late in the match, Sarri defended his player, saying "Gaetano said nothing to the referee" and that four or five staff members around him had confirmed this. "Therefore an obvious refereeing error," Sarri concluded, describing the situation as confused by the official.
Sarri noted that Atalanta's integration of new signings remained incomplete. "The process must still begin," he said. "Kessié has had a couple of training sessions. Unfortunately we have some injuries, a market that unlocked in the final part. We have been forced to take and return already several times. There is the final two signings to insert and also Kristensen." He also explained why Rowe did not play: "Unfortunately we had saved the last two substitutions for two lads who couldn't make it. These are things that can happen."
