De Roon arrives in Rome for medical and contract signing

Marten de Roon has arrived in Rome to complete his transfer from Atalanta on 30 August 2026. The 1991-born Dutch midfielder communicated his wish to join Roma to Atalanta late on 29 August, and the two clubs agreed a deal worth 1 million euros. De Roon will reunite with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini and join fellow Dutch players Devyne Rensch and Donyell Malen in the squad, as well as gain access to Champions League football. De Roon considered his time at Atalanta finished and had been in talks with Bologna before Gasperini moved decisively for him. The move became possible after Roma secured the departure of Neil El Aynaoui to RB Leipzig. Speaking at Atalanta's training ground that morning, de Roon said: "For me it is a sad and difficult day, even though I should be happy. I spoke to Gasperini, it was all a bit of a lightning bolt. He wanted me strongly at Roma, and given how things were here it was the right solution." Medical examinations and contract signing were scheduled to follow his midday arrival at Fiumicino airport.

Marten De Roon has completed his move to Roma as a midfield reinforcement. Speaking to Rai Sport at the airport before departing Atalanta, De Roon described the circumstances of his transfer: "It hasn't been easy. The last month has been very difficult because of how things have gone. Since I came back from the World Cup I've had some discomfort. I spoke to Gasperini—it was a lightning move. He called me and wanted me strongly. Given the situation here, it was the right thing for me." De Roon is undergoing medical examinations today, with his contract signature to follow. He is expected to be available for selection and should feature in Roma's squad for tomorrow's match against Lecce.

AS Roma have announced the signing of Leonardo Balerdi from Olympique Marseille on a loan deal with a right of purchase. The 1999-born Argentine defender joins on those terms and will bolster Roma's defensive options for the 2026-27 season. Bareldi brings substantial European experience, having played for Borussia Dortmund and Marseille in his career. He has made over 200 appearances in official competitions across his time in Europe and holds 11 caps for Argentina's national team.
