Spygate in Championship: Southampton expelled after analyst caught spying on Middlesbrough training
Southampton has been excluded from the Championship playoff final after an English Football League investigation discovered one of the club's analysts spying on a Middlesbrough training session before their semifinal first leg. As a result, Middlesbrough will take Southampton's place in Saturday's final against Hull City. The incident, which sparked considerable attention in English football, has echoes at AS Roma. In February 2024, Michele Orecchio, a collaborator of then-Torino coach Ivan Juric, was discovered observing a training session at Roma's Trigoria training ground on the famous "collinetta" (small hill). The same issue had been previously reported by José Mourinho's staff during the previous season. However, in both Roma cases, no significant sanctions were issued. The Southampton expulsion represents a notably stricter response to the spying incident compared to what occurred at Roma, highlighting differing approaches to the breach across different competitions and leagues.
