Bruno Conti has left AS Roma after 54 years with the club, with his contract ending yesterday following a failed renewal. The 71-year-old, who turned that age in March, spent his final period at Trigoria working alongside Alberto De Rossi, who has also departed the club. Conti held numerous roles during his tenure, from youth prospect signed away from baseball in Nettuno to talent scout, player wearing the number 7, and staff member at various levels.
Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini had hoped to retain Conti through Roma's centenary year in 2027, having come to know and appreciate him. The Friedkin Group made Conti a proposal to continue, which he thanked them for and declined. However, conversations about a way forward persist, and there remains hope among some at the club that an agreement could still be reached. A potential role as a testimonial—another of many positions Conti could fill for Roma—is among possibilities being discussed.
The club is pursuing Massimo Margiotta as its preferred candidate to lead the youth academy, though Margiotta still holds a contract with Hellas Verona with one year remaining. Separating Conti from Roma, insiders acknowledge, remains an almost impossible task given his near-total integration into the fabric of the organisation across five decades.
