DAZN pundit Fabio Bazzani, speaking to Retesport after Roma's win over Genoa, said the team are playing extraordinary football and that the step forward compared with a year ago is clear. Asked about Gian Piero Gasperini's striker Santiago Castro, Bazzani said the forward's room for improvement lies in being more incisive in the box. He pointed out that Castro had zero touches in the penalty area in the first half, which he called too little for a centre-forward, although he did score in the second half. Gasperini had asked Castro to stay more involved in the build-up play, and Bazzani said that if he finds that consistency he can grow significantly.
Bazzani said that playing for a big club helps, but Castro must manage the psychology of being Donyell Malen's understudy, whom he described as a "marziano". He said Castro has great spirit and is adapting to the role, which requires a mental habit of being ready when Gasperini gives him a chance. "I know Castro well, he has an incredible passion for football, he lives to be a protagonist, he has character and enthusiasm," Bazzani said.
On Matteo Lulli's emotion after scoring, Bazzani said it reminded him of his own first Serie A goal. "He looked at everyone, the referee, the linesman, wondering if it was all real. He has made a great impact this season, he had the coach's trust because he showed straight away in pre-season that he was ready. He has won an important prize."
On the wider league, Bazzani said Inter are where everyone expects them to be, while Lazio have been the big surprise so far but are unlikely to fight for the title. He said Juventus are sending worrying signals and are struggling to take off, and that yesterday's defeat could weigh heavily on them. He said Roma are objectively the team closest to Inter, with more alternatives, style and spirit. He also noted that Como must manage a double fixture load, having won in Florence yesterday but with some lapses.
Asked which winger he would give Roma in January, Bazzani said it depends on how much the club can spend. He would target European profiles and avoid wasting money on players who may not have a positive impact, otherwise it is better to stay with the current options. On Kvernadze, he said the Georgian is an excellent player who already knows Serie A, but that the step up from Frosinone to Roma is very high and would not be simple for him.
